PPF or ceramic coating for Hong Kong roads
CarPro 鍍膜能良好附著於高品質 PPF(包括 STEK DYNO)與原漆面。
STEK DYNO) |
You don’t have to pick one. PPF takes the hits. Ceramic coating makes the car easier to wash. A lot of owners in Hong Kong do both: STEK film and CarPro on top.
The short version
- PPF is for stone chips and scrapes. Coating is for UV, bird droppings and gloss.
- On a new or freshly resprayed car, start with PPF on the front. Coating is the cheaper first step on older paint.
- Most people do a front-end package or the whole car. Inspections and quotes are free.
Impact versus sun, dirt and chemicals
PPF is a thick film. It takes stone chips on Tolo Highway, grit on site roads, and the parking scrape that ruins a bumper. On a new or resprayed car it protects that paint. STEK DYNO can even self-heal light wash marks with heat.
Ceramic coating is a thin layer that resists bird droppings, sap, traffic film and fade. Water beads off, so washes are faster and you get fewer water spots. CQuartz UK 3.0 is glossy and tough; SiC is slicker and better against water spots; Finest Reserve is the high-end gloss (certified install). Coating will not stop a stone chip the way PPF will.
Together: PPF on the bits that get hit, coating on the film and the rest of the car, so it all looks and washes the same.
Side by side
| Ceramic coating | PPF | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Easier cleaning, UV, gloss | Stone chips and scrapes |
| Stone chips | Limited | Excellent |
| Self-heal | No | Yes on most premium films (STEK DYNO) |
| Thickness | About 0.5-2 µm | About 150-200 µm |
| Life | About 2-5+ years with care | About 5-10 years |
| Cost | Lower to start | Higher to start |
| Best combo | Coat paint and PPF so it all washes the same | PPF on impact areas, coat on top |
How people use it here
- City daily: PPF on the bumper, lights and door edges; coat the rest. CQuartz UK 3.0 is good value.
- Highway / New Territories weekends: front PPF (bumper, bonnet, wings, mirrors, A-pillars) plus coating. SiC is a strong choice if you street-park.
- Track days: full PPF (DYNO) with Finest Reserve.
What we’d do
On a tighter budget or an older car, a good ceramic coating still gives real gloss and much easier washing. On a new or resprayed car, put PPF on the front first, then CarPro on top.
